We all experience soreness or tightness in the jaw from time to time. In almost all cases, these symptoms go away quickly and don’t affect our lives or cause lasting discomfort. When the pain is persistent, lingers or gets worse, it may be a sign of a more serious condition. Also, if you are experiencing pain so intense that chewing, smiling and even breathing is difficult, you may have a condition commonly referred to as TMJ.
TMJ disorder gets its name from the pain it causes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This joint connects the lower jaw to the skull. TMJ disorders (sometimes referred to as TMD) can cause chronic pain in the head, neck, jaw or face; problems chewing or biting; popping or clicking sounds when opening and closing the mouth.
Although there no clear cause of TMJ, there are many conditions that can contribute to this condition, including:
- Bruxism (more commonly referred to as jaw clenching or teeth grinding) often goes hand-in-hand with TMJ disorder. It overworks and stresses the joint and can also change the alignment of the bite as well as affects muscles used for chewing.
- Stress can make TMJ symptoms more severe if there is grinding of the teeth, clenching of the jaw, or tightening of jaw muscles.
- TMJ disorders can also be linked to common dental problems (like a bad bite), joint problems (like arthritis), muscle problems, or a previous trauma to the jaw or face.
Oral Appliance Therapy - At Roseville Topsmiles, we specialize in oral appliances that help in the treatment of TMJ. Proper use of these appliances can decrease compression on pain-sensitive tissue, hold the joint in place as well as realign the jaw and its muscles, alleviating the symptoms of TMJ.
